Football idiomatic expressions are more connected with the educational world than what you, may, think. For instance to score an own goal in terms of education can mean that you have done something counter productive.

Another example could be “to kick something around” means that when you are on a group activity and you have an idea, before that idea turns into the final or decisive one need to be “kicked around”.
